Default Transom Repair-estimate cost

I am about to embark on a transom repair. I have been reading all the great posts on this subject but the only thing I haven't really seen is how much people spend on this repair. I know diffent boats have different circumstances but just looking for a ball park figure.

Just curious as to how much some of you do-it yourself-ers have spent on doing a full transom repair (from the outside)? How about those of you that had it professionaly done?

Thanks.

Hey BlueSeaCraft - it would probably help us some, if we knew what size boat -

so I'll give you what I have, based on doing a 20' Seafari, with a 1-1/2 inch thick transom, from the outside, and noting that I replace the core of my transom with plywood, not once of the high tech core replacement materials (which I'm not directly familiar with, but believe they are considerably more expensive for material cost, from what others have said in here).

Three sheets marine ply, 1/2" (others have done 2, 3/4")

two gal west systems epoxy, thickener, hardeners - both std and slow (working in the summer sun, wanted to extend my lay-up time

several yards of cloth, some matt, and some woven roving

mixing cups, stirrers, gloves for the hands - all one use throw-aways

(I won't add in the beer cost)

something on the order of $600, and alot of my time - which I don't regret - I had prior experience with fiberglass work, and now I know how this one is put together.

I can't speak directly to a pro cost estimate, but I'd guess somewhere between $2K - 4K - I'll let others speak up on that.

hope that helps some.

Bill

Thanks for the info Bill.

It's a 1973 20' cc.

It had some transom work done by the previous owner. I actually started to take it apart yesterday. The previous owner had it raised to 25" but the job was not done well. They put 2 steel plates and did the 5" raise using fiberglass as seen below. Look at all those holes, and none of the bolts had 5200.

Steel Transom Plate that was put on the outside and inside of the transom.

exterior transom after I removed the steel plate. Looks like the blue transom is the origional 20" and then the 5" addition.

Did my GW 204 from outside. Cost about $750 in material. Used epoxy resin.
