suggestions needed
Looking for a little advice on how to lay up new glass around the notched area of the transom especially the verticle part where I have to reattach the inner liner of the boat. As seen in the pictures, the rounded corner of the verticle portion is butted against the new transom which is just a little narrower than the old. I'm not quite sure on how to go about tying this area in and having it still look good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -will

Re: suggestions needed
Looks like you are going to have to do some grinding on the old part to get down to the glass. You can probably use some cabosil/microballoons to fill in the gaps between the old part and the new part and then glass over the junction trying to feather the two parts into each other. Some heavy matt should work for that. did you bond the liner to the transom somehow? that important.

Will,
Here's what I'm doing. Still a work in progress so I'm not entirely sure it will look as good as I hope it will! [image][/image] [image]http://[/image] I took 2 wraps around the corners (the second picture does not show that that well) |

Re: suggestions needed
Thanks dcobbett. I was thinking I would have to grind down to the glass. I'm hoping to leave the rounded edge so that I will not have as much work to do later.
Strick, I have not permanitely set the inner liner pieces in yet. Right now they are just resting on the hull. I remember when taking them out it was a huge pain to remove them because they were bonded to the inside skin on the transom. I'm thinking I will do the same when its time to get them back in the boat. Thanks -will |

Re: suggestions needed
dcobbett, How did you get such a nice square edge on the top of your transom? Did you do the top, inside, and outside separatley or did you roll it over the top and sand square?

Re: suggestions needed
I glued the Penske in, then cut it to line and height with a skill saw. That gave me a good straight line and the cut was perpendicular to the outside face of the transom. After that, I was just carefull not to screw it up as I applied the glass. The only layers that went over the cut out were the last 4 that made up the thickened area. I rounded the inner and outer edges befoore I started that, then I used a board clamped to the inner and outer faces as well as staples on the top as neded.

Re: suggestions needed
Will,
I would suggest you remove the liner again and grind/clean the underside a bit. Also grind the area where the liner makes contact with the transom. When you install the liner back in, fillet and glass from the inside all along the back. When I did mine, I did not try to wrap the glass over the top of the notch. Bring the glass straight up both sides, and then fill in a little between the sandwich. I then used a router along a ledger board I screwed in the transom as a guide. The router milled the whole thing flat. good luck. |
