Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
While looking at the boat today I got a seemingly good idea. I would really like to make the life jackets fit under the gunnel in the bow. I just dont know how I would get this to work. You could attach the net where the liner and hull meet, and then stretch it across to the bottom of the gunnel where the bolster are. That way there is enough room to put the life jackets out of the way.
Has anyone done this on their seacraft? Where could you get a custom made cargo net that would work? It would begin a little infront of the step and run all the way to the anchor door. The thing is, in the back it would have to be about 14" wide, and at the front it would need to be about 20" wide. Can you get these types of nets made? Also what could you use to attach it permantly to the inside and have a quick release type of deal on the outside, so that you could quickly open the net? Thanks

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
they do make some very good velcro that would hold the netting up
I have some on a fridge in a larger boat to stop the door from opening it is very strong stuff. I bet you could velcro the netting in and you would be able to remove the net with a good tug sounds like a good idea. on another boat I had I found velcro straps that had a grommet in one end I used a screw to attach the velcro strip to the liner of a 31 bertram looped the velcro strap around the life jackets and secured them inside the cuddy. that worked nicely, |

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
i have kind of the same type of setup in the cuddy of mine. i just got a cargo net from the autoparts store(suv organizer) and cut it to the shape i needed and laced a bungee cord in and out of the top and bottom (two seperate bungees) and screwed eyelets used for bimini top straps into the forward bulkhead to secure the bungees.. actually the life jackets slide out the bottom very easy with a good tug. you could probably come up with something similar. hope this helps

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
Another idea may be to use two smaller nets that overlap allowing items to be slipped in behind , moved back and then positioned once the under side ntting is cleared positioning the item in the most convenient position. Also, there is no rule against taking advantage of it being basically netting and repositioning the elastic cord route through the netting and adjusting the tensioning as desired.

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
In the Keys there must be someone able to tie you a net. Check with someone who makes cast nets or repairs nets like the ones on a shrimp boat. This time of year they are probably sitting on thier hands looking for something to do. My cast net was tied by a guy in Cape Coral and was not much more than a mass produced one. It is absolutly beautiful and made to my specs.

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
I used to use cargo organizing nets made for the trunk of a car to hold 4 life preservers in the gunwale of my Pro Line. The are stretchy with bungi cords already built in. They worked great, and I got them at WalMart.

Re: Under Gunnel Storage (Life Jackets)
You can buy "storage net hammocks" for gear at any good marine supply store. They hang from hooks I installed under the side decks in the cabin of my Seafari and lay against the flare of the hull, making good use of space that's otherwise wasted. They're 3-4' long and 1-2' deep and will easily hold 4 foam ski vests; open at the top, so easy to retrieve gear from. I've used them for years, and they're also handy for holding the side curtains up out of the way against the hull.
