Default Bracket on a 20 footer?

I have a 1984 20 foot boat. When I bought the boat the former owner had fabricated a stainlees steel sleeve that bolted over the existing transom with small arm bolted to the deck. After rewelding his handiwork, I am looking into an Armstrong bracket for my 175 Merc. I would like to know if anyone has gone the bracket route? I have heard that while it does improve the ride, the added weight must be compensated for by some floatation in the bracket? Any thoughts, or ideas on bracket mfgs? Jason

84:

If you do a search of this site, you'll find numerous references to the subject. Check out the Hermco web page for info on one of many flotation brackets available, this one designed by former SeaCraft builder Bill Potter.

Personally, I liked the bracket on my 20. Brad, you should have asked me a few weeks ago and I would have let you take the boat out and check it out with the bracket on. You really would have liked it. But, I sold the boat. If you would like, I can check with the guy that bought it to see if he would be willing to take you out so you can check it out. Let me know....
