Default gunnells

My gunnels are very flimsy up until where my railing starts. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to eleviate it?

Tango,

Have you removed your rub rail and checked how well the cap is connected? Is the flexing coming from the cap and the hull connection being lose, or is the fiberglass rotting?

The rub rail is connected with screws, but the cap to hull connection is made with aluminum rivots (which I found many of mine were barely there if not gone). This is an easy fix, but if it's the fiberglass issue, you may have a big job ahead of you.

Good Luck!

Lloyd

tango - i know your boat is a seafari that the cabin cut off, and since im redoing a seafari i can tell you whats going on, i had the same problem when then the 2 cabin bulkheads were out, but now that i had replaced them it is noticably stiffer, but not to my satisfaction soo ill be adding and teak bulkhead that will have rod holder but outs mid way between the transom and cabin bulkhead, since your going with a center console from he same setup as mine id suggest install two bulkheads on each side in the places i mentioned, any other questiones about the seafari model feel free to asked, after i stripped mine i now know every crack and crevice on the damn boat

CSCers,
Does anyone else have pieces of plywood laminated (poorly) under the coveringboards? This is on a 20cc. Where the rod storage is.

I'm assuming you guys are talking aft of the console .....Tango ... I had a little bit of flex but nothing was loose or flimsy. On the 23 at least there are/were teak rod storage racks under the gunwale caps that also act as support for that cap. I'd fiberglass "knees" under the cap to give the cap more support if its that bad. As far as the attachment of the cap to the hull sides I would check to see how that was accomplished .... I've got a stainless screw every 6" ( as a result of the attachment of the cap to the hull and then the attachment of the rubrail)

JW ... I have plywood encapsulated in glass all the way around the entire boat under the cap / covering board (boat was manufactured this way...very clean layup) If fact I will be replacing a section of it as has gotten wet through various screw holes that were in the cap. Sounds like a replacement project?? Why do you ask ??

Thanks guys, Ben I was surprised you remember what boat I exactly had, That sounds about right with the bulkheads. Of course the knees also sound good. Food for thought.
