Default Fuel Tank

I have a '79 MA with original console and no seats. Removed captains chairs and never replaced because had a lot of fuel/tank problems. Finally removed strainer on bottom of pickup tube and motor seems to get the fuel it needs. Hatch (cover) of 68 gal. fuel cell, most probably original, needs work(soft). Towards rear of hatch, in center, is a small, 4'' square inspection cover to inspect sending unit. This cover is bulging because the 90 degree "filler neck" appears too high to clear the hatch as well as the small inspection cover. Anyone else come across this problem/solution? Would this require a custom built fuel cell to replace? Thanks.

Money aside (only boaters would say that), you may wish to consider pulling the whole mess, cleaning up the bilge and replacing the tank, hoses, wiring and hatches. Once you're in there, you can measure for a tank that will be built to your specs, including pick-up, vent and fill tube locations.

It's work, but the confidence you'll have when it done is huge...

Otto, I like your advice but not sure I want to do all that. Already redone the transome, about a grand and its cracking across the top, still seems strong. Paid same guy the next year to remove all top deck hardware and repaint with texture on walking surface. That came out pretty nice as well. I was just looking at all the pictures posted under Jasons 20', after realizing that he was one of the administers. Not sure I'm ready to take on all that. Would like to do a leaning post and T-Top but afraid the floor sustem will not support it. Realistically could look very much like the inside of Jasons. Anyway thank you.

Capt. Brad I saw some pictures posted earlier today. Is it a '79 MA, and has it been repainted? Looks much whiter than mine. Nice shots! I hope that's what mine looks like-you know you rarely get to see what your ride looks like. Sounds like you think my Fuel Hatch has been replaced and the inspection cover was smaller, maybe an after thought?
