Ice box overboard drains

has anyone installed the drains for the ice boxes after replacing the transom? Looks like it could be tricky, and maybe it would be better to relocate these? I have unlimited access now. I'm about 1/2 way through the transom job and would like to have a plan for this. Thanks.

Hey Jim …How are ya ?? Sounds like things are moving along ??

You’re going to have to get them to drain somehow ….as even with the drains in them they always have residual water in the bottom(due to drain location). I would personally make new drains in the bottom of the boxes (so all the water drains) and run them out the hull side …. Not through the transom... the fewer holes in the new transom the better [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

Assuming you're re-routing the scuppers through the transom, is there a way to tie the drains into the scuppers by running a flexible tube/hose from the ice box to the scupper tube? I agree with Scott that you probably don't want any more holes in the transom if possible.

I think you have several options here. I agree with Scott that you shound not go back thru the transom but out the side with their own separate drains. Yet you could do as ScottM has suggested and tie into the floor scuppers (see pic)

Come to think about it, if your plans include a live well in the transom you could Tee them into the bait tanks main drain and have all water exiting out through one hull fitting

Jim, when I replaced transom I replaced the ice box drains with new brass ferules with rolled ends thru the transom. They are about 12 inches above the water line. Somehow I feel better about that than adding another hose and clamp in any area where water flows below the water line like deck drains. -Paul

When Mike at wildfire redid my transom he ran them out the sides,this eliminates leaks and eventually rotting again.They work great out the sides.A small hose bent to a 90 and a thru hull fitting. I wonder why they didnt do it this way back in 1973? :shocke [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]d:

Guys, Thanks for you input. At first I was thinking of each box going into a Y fitting and then out the transom. If I go with the I/O, I'll be putting a big hole in the transom any way.

Scott, I haven't worked much on the boat but I'm now pressed for time since I'll be losing my space indoors. The cooler temps have helped a lot.

Jim - if the bottom of the ice box is not going to be level with the water line, meaning the box will stay parallel with the curve of the transom cap, you will want to place the drain on the outboard aft corner. If you're making the boxes so the bottom is level with the water line, you should be able to place the drain in the center.

I *think* the box is level with the water line ... (No boat here to check) .... BUT anything will be better than its current location which, in my case, is high enough in the well wall to allows about a 1/4" of water to pool. Those boxes never seem to be dry. Chances are that the boat will, ever so slightly, list to port or starboard when she’s in the water so location on the bottom is your preference
