Default Battery location question

Where is the stock location for the battery(ies) on the 1970 Seafari? Mine are out on the deck behind the helm seat, and it doesn't seem right. I've seen some pics somewhere with two batteries mounted between the motor and gas tank. Is this the best location?

mine were in the very back of my seafari and now there in the cabin where the porta potty would go, since im putting a bracket on such a small boat i figured it would help offset the weight

Mine are in the transom where the original bait or storage wells were located.

The original location depends on whether you have an I/O or O/B. For an O/B, the location is under the transom seat on the port side. For an I/O, they used an unusually shaped battery between the engine and the fuel tank, under the deck.

Fr Frank: how far can the battery be from the motor? Is there a minimum cable distance? To re-distribute weight, I am thinking of putting the batteries in the center of the boat...which would have them 8 feet from the outboard engine. Thanks for info, aaf

I mounted two batteries under the console. Went to a welding shop and got 20 feet of welding cable ,then solder
the terminal ends on. Both are on a Cole Hearse battery
switch. Never had any problems with the heavy gauge cable.
Put red heat shrink on the positive ends to identify.
The less weight you have in the transom the better.

You can put them up to 50 ft away w/o noticeable voltage loss.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to look at either putting the batteries up front in the cabin in that little porta potty spot, or building a box under one of the seats.
