1989 Yamaha Excel V-6 (225 hp) Keep or Scrap??
Wanted to get some opinions on this older engine. Is it hard to get replacement parts for this engine? How about a lower unit for instance? What about a good cond. used LU?
This motor is carb. Will it survive on E-85 fuel? If so will it require a bunch of maint? The reason I ask... This is the current motor on our boat. Just got the boat back from my brother. Motor ran fine last time out, albeit 5 years ago!! A small crack in the Lower Unit casing has GROWN. Now it comprimizes the LU. No way it could be welded. Pictures later today.

I have a Merc manual from late 70's early 1980's that talks about their fuel hoses being rated for 10% ethanol. You might go through it and double check . . . Those excels are built on the 2.6L block . . . so I'm 99.9% sure any 2.6L lower will swap. They come in 1.86:1 or 2.0:1 ratios. SEI sells brand new lowers for yamaha 2.6L motors for $795 with a 3 year warranty.
http://www.sterndrive.cc/Merchant2/m...ory_Code=SE416 My budget prevents me from buying new outboards, but I have ZERO issue taking a well maintained older motor on a long ride. Those excels were strong for a smaller displacement motor . . . they have the horizontal front and make great power for a 390lb motor. Check the shift shaft when you have the lower unit off. |

Ok, this motor has a gear ratio of 1.80:1
************************** Warning - dumb question of the week!!!! ************************** So if the tach reads 5000 rpm is that the rpm of the prop OR rpm of the engine head / shaft??? I always thought RPM was of the prop.

Just check the shift shaft, clean the carbs, check all the hoses, run it with premix first trip out each season to make sure oil pump is working. |

The 2.6 v-6 gearcases are all interchangable. The models prior to the 1986 model had a different shape than the 1986 and on. The 1986 and later were all the same housing. The 1.73 gear ratio was available only in the old stle gearcase for the v-6 Special also known as a 220. The Pro V 150 had a 2/1 ratio. The Pro V 200 and the Excell or 225 had a 1.81/1 ratio. The rest had a 1.86/1 ratio. The parts are interchangable in all of the later model gearcases. The 3.1 liter gear cases will all bolt up to the 2.6 even though a different size housing. They have some 1.75/1 gears in some models. Hope this helps. To the best of my knowledge they were all available in counter rotation. ***************************************** Hope this link helps!! ***************************************** |
