Default *** HELP from Mercury Pros***

I received this request from my good friend. I know nothing about them, therefore I am requesting advise from you Merc gurus!!

Is there after market replacement smart gauges that will work with his wiring harness? Is there a way to find these smart gauges somewhere? Whats the best course of action here?

Chuck-

I have a pair of VDO SmartCraft Gauges that came with my 2001 Mercury 225 Opimax outboard engine. They were used on Mercury Marine outboards in 2000 thru 2002.

Since that time, Mercury has gone with a different manufacture and their new gauges are no longer compatible with the older engine harness. Meaning, if a problem develops with your older gauge, you're out of luck.
VDO no mlonger carries these old gauges.
One is a tach and the other a speedo. The problem with both is the LED screen containing information like fuel, engine temp, fuel and oil pressure, etc.has faded out and can longer be read due to sun exposure.

Gauge models are:
79-859 067 A1 (tach);
79-859 068 A2 (speedo)

I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

The 2 gauges look like this
