Rod Holder Help - Outriggers/Offshore

Well - good, bad, or indifferent i got a deal on a set of gunnel mount outriggers. I've decided to move forward with the install. What i'm thinking is, i'd like to pull 2 rods off the riggers, a long and a short.

The problem i am having is rod holders. Ideally, i'd like to have 6 rods on the gunnels. The 2 most aft would be straight out the back for flat lines. Another set forward of that would be for the short riggers, and the most forward for the long riggers. I am a little confused about what angle rod holders i should use, and exactly where to install them.

So, here's a terrible picture of the back of the boat.




As you can see, at the back are hawse pipes for dock lines. Just ahead of those, are a 30 degree rod holder pointed straight out the back. Ahead of those, are another set of 30 degree rod holders that are angled outward about 10 - 15 degrees. The width of the gunnels only allows you to angle a 30 degree holder about 15 degrees at the most, any more than that and you hit the inside of the gunnels.

I am going to install the riggers about mid way of my console. I'd like to add another set of rod holders, i just dont know how exactly to set them up so lines dont interfere and rod tips wont hit each other.

I'm considering removing the forward most holder, glassing that hold over, and move those rod holders as far forward as i can right to where the gunnel narrows and the recessed rail starts. Then - installing another set between the 2.


Any thoughts, i know it's confusing...............its confusing the hell out of me

When I troll six lines I use the four rod holders on the gunnels, the two straight out the back like you have installed and the front two that angle to the outside, plus I have two other 30 degree holders located on my engine well pointing straight out the back that connect to the flat lines. (If it's really rough and I can't handle all six lines myself I go back to just the the four on the gunnels, the two up front to the outrigger and two rear ones down to flatlines). Oh yeah, two sets of outrigger lines are needed if you go with six lines, one set that goes to the top of the rigger for the rods in the front gunnel rod holders and one set of lines that only go about 2/3 of the way up the outrigger for the rear rod holders (I loop mine at the first "eye bolt" below the tip). Just for grins I also have a center holder on my leaning post to go straight out the back as a long line for tuna when I'm in a real froggy mood. Remember, short rods to the back and longer rods to the front.
