0pening up the transom
Would someone be kind enough to who knows this forum well put up a link that shows how past members cut open their transom to rebuild. Thank's for your help.

are you doing the transom from the inside or outside? What are you replacing the transom with? |

Found it. You have a 20SF.
Look at Hammer's 20 . . . old gallery. Transom thickness is not 2 sheets of 3/4". If I remember correctly the thickness of the core is 3/4" + 5/8". If you are raising the transom there are some issues. I know with the 20MA's if you raise the transom to 25" the bottom bolt holes put the bolts right through the splashwell floor . . . I'm not sure if that's the case with the 20sf, but something to consider/plan around. http://www.classicseacraft.com/197120CC/index.html |

From the outside . . . leave a nice fat lip. I wouldn't go as wide as Hammer, but enough of a lip so you glass the skin back you are glassing / fairing a flat surface. Dig out all the wood (a Drill helps see pic below) and then back fill the area with Arjay, seacast or some sort of pud/fiber mix. Once the skins are lined up with the new core . . . grind a nice wide 6" taper (3" each side) to the middle of the seam and use 4" 1708 tape to build it back up. Overlap tape across the seam (deepest part of the valley). The nice part about backfilling the bottom area with puddy is that you don't have to worry about penetrating the core if you mount a transom ducer

Yes it is a 20 but some of the transom has already been hogged out from the last owner. Seeing how I'm planning to remove the deck if I move forward is there any advantage to replacing from the inside or does this open another can of worms ? Thanks for the heads up about new bolt holes going through the splash well. Big project to be honest not sure about doing it. That's why I was looking for some insight from the members here. I may just end up selling it for 500 bucks it's a great project boat and we all know how nice they are when finnished. My son will be heart broken. Thank's again |

If u raise the transom, raise it to 27". Plenty of room for bolts and that's about where they like to be with the AV plate visible while on plane trimmed up

Thank you, that would have been one of my questions, where will the plate sit at if raised to 25". So 27" sounds like the best option. |

Am about to do the transom on my 1978 20sf. Can anyone confirm the thickness of core needed? Was going to buy 2 sheets of 3/4", but saw the post above saying it might be 3/4 + 5/8".
