I will be hauling my '79 24' CC on Monday to rebuild the transom.On other threads I've been following the consensus seems to be raise it to 30". So the question is will a 25" '98 Johnson 225 work on a 30" transom both efficiently and safely. Will cavitation be a problem when you need the power the most ie. inlets, following seas, etc. Re powering isn't in the cards right now but I don't want to do this repair again to raise it. Thanks guys, Classic SeaCraft Rocks!

I raised my transom to 30" and installed a 30" etec - at the right height the motor ended up being about 2" above the top of the raised transom. That said your 25" will not work on a 30" transom as the motor will be too high. You could use a manual jack plate and that will allow you to use your 25" motor on your raised transom.

If I understand this, If you built a 32" transom your motor would have been right on? Based on this my 25" would be 3" too high, which might cause problems.

I'd be careful using a jackplate to mount the motor lower on the transom. With the motor down in the running position, you probably wouldn't be able to trim the motor very much. Trimming would pinch the controls and fuel between the motor and transom. If you hit something submerged and the motor popped up, you'd be SOL. You'll also be moving the motor further back, which means it will be that much lower every time the stern dips down.
If you're going to keep the motor, you'd be better off using the money to buy a 30" lower unit. That or build a seagate to keep the water that gets over the transom from coming on deck. |

30"lower unit, Never thought of that.Will have to weigh that out against bitting the bullet and repowering. All it takes is money
