Default Transom Mounted Transducer Placement

Could anyone provide some thoughtful insight as to where, on a 23' SC hull, I should place my T/M 'ducer. I recognize that this is critical and i don't want to blow it. Since we all fish the same boats, i am drawing on your experience!!!

I appreciate your response!!!!

I have mine placed on the center chine,(inboard), not sure about an outboard. If it is then I think I would install it on the outboard as far as you can on the 2nd chine to get clean water . I think the most critical part is getting the angle and yaw correct so that you get the least amount of disturbed water running over it. Its nice being able to read the bottom when going at high speed instead of having to slow down to pick up the bottom. Just my opinion Hoop, Im sure there are a lot of other opinions, ideas lurking here!!! (28 visitors and 10 members ??? (THT must be boring tonight )

Here is where I put mine on my 20.

I mounted the starboard to the hull, and the td to the starboard, in case I needed to adjust it. I got lucky and hit it dead on. Reads bottom to 30+ MPH.

Tim D-

Nice idea about the starboard, I can see how that would help in placement. I think I will give that a shot, thanks for the tip.

Miles,

I hear ya about the smooth water, it is important so that you don't have to come off plane to scan the water beneath you. I have some vacation time next week and I hope to have the time to do this project then!

Hoop,
I mounted my 'ducer to the inboard-most side of the 2nd chine (see pics on the 23' page). I wanted it as deep in the water as possible without getting too close to the engine. As it turns out I don't get any reading beyond 18-20mph so either it's too far out of the water on plane or there is too much intereference by the engine. It's not the end of the world though since we also have an old Koden color CRT with a thru-hull 'ducer that reads at all speeds.

Might as well do it right the 1st time,Thanks for asking this ?.(nice 20)
I would prefer to 5200 etc, to the Hull NEW transom ! Can lexan be siliconed/5200 etc.? is starbaoard better ! I will screw the td on it so there goes Force , which one holds screws better ?

I shoot mine through the hull, works better than any transom mount I've tried. Gives a good picture at crusing speed. The less junk on the transom the better IMHO.

SEC - can you elaborate on that? I am trying to decide between a transom mount and a thru hull. Where did you mount it - in the bilge close to the bottom of the bait well?

Do you use a standard bronze thru hull transducer?

I heard you are supposed to mount it in a reservoir of oil (vegitable?) so the signal has something to be transfered through? Or can you shoot right through the hull?

I had my doubts about the performance, but when I read your reply I am having second thoughts.

Thanks

Hooper I put mine(20') right were TimD did and it works great. Slightly inboard of the center of the seconed running plane. The only time I have a problem reading is when I cut a hard left and get a little air under it. Tim nice boat BTW. Capt Brad Lexan and 5200 is whats holding my gas tank in so I'm sure its strong enough to hold a transducer on. I think I might try to mount mine that way when I redo the transom, the less holes the better!

I'm going to mount the Garmin td right where Ya said,Thanks for that info.It came with a transom mount,
I also have a Furuno chartplotter,The td shoots thru the Hull.I bought this unit from a friend. It was mounted shooting through the hull,w/clear silicone,It was removed then replaced using a white silicone ? He said it did not work as well.Is there a trick or placement for a shoot thru hull ? I really don't want to put a HOLE thru the hull.I would really love to put in the bow/angle towards the bow SONAR !!!! Ok back to reality.
