looking to buy 1982 23ft inboard i know its not the potter hull but was these boat builted well and are they desirable, also was there much trouble with the fuel tanks going bad and any other helpful comment on this vintage boat is good imformation to help prepare me.....thanks for your time

Having fully renovated a 1989 23 hull, I think you will find the hull to be of very good quality. If the fuel tank is foamed in place, there is a liklihood of replacement. A 3 to 5 PSI pressure test will resolve that. It's a nice hull/motor combination and it comes down to price vs condition. If you are uncomfortable with the questionable condition of parts of the vessel, I would reccommend a survey, which should include a look at the motor, fuel system, all the thru-hull fittings with attention to moisture in the deck and transom. El: The 23 IB's are truly a great boat and you cannot beat the ride in snotty conditions. I totally stripped down my 1975 23' CC IB and I'm just about done...well, we'll see. I have replaced the tanks, engine, added new T-Top, all new wiring, controls, hardware, Imron etc. I would be happy to share any info. There were a few "done" 23 IB's for sale in the New Jersey area, and I believe at least one is a "Potter" built, could be worth a look as it can sometimes be cheaper to buy it "done" (if its done right!). Please note that the entire cockpit deck/sole comes out, it may be screwed and/or caulked in the boats you will see, this a real potential problem area because its tuff to access and it WILL hold water in various areas that you cannot see easily. If the tanks on the boat are original, and/or foamed in, forget them, they will have to go. Try to assess moisture penetration in the transom area, check the exhaust port area for sure, and if the decks are "spongy" be careful...anyway, I could go on and on...let me know if you want to discuss anything in detail, I'll post your profile. El Pas, dont know how much they are asking but the one up for auction is telling me the value is up there even for one in "fair" condition. Jeff, sure hope you post pictures of your finished project !!!I dont think my whole inner liner/cockpit/sole is removable in my boat though.In a straigh line back from the motor box it is, but thats it unless I am missing something?? I have a '82 23 Sceptre OB and the quality is top notch. CSY did an excellent job putting these boats together, so I wouldn't worry about inherent quality issues. As far as the tank goes, it depends. Mine is in fine shape and as far as I can tell it's original. |

Hi El Pescador.
Have you considered configuring your inboard SeaCraft project with a 'Jack Shaft'? That way, you would be using an I/O drive (Alpha or Bravo or even Bravo III) and would have an advantage in shallow water over the I/B approach. I expect this would be especially attractive for use in the Bahamas! If you plan to store your new boat out of the water, the I/O stigma practically vanishes. Cheers, Wes (954) 850 8458 |
