more about my transom (not as bad as i thought)
i pulled out some more thru hulls out of the transom (there were about 8) and this one was a few inches lower then the one with the rot, ad the wood surrounding it is solid, the inside skin of the transom is delaminated, but only above the water line, im really confused.
also John eagleton - i saw your boat at sailfish marina today, i was the scruffy looking kid wiyth curly hair, Nice Rig!

Re: more about my transom (not as bad as i thought)
I'm thinking your post is a question, is that right? If you are curious about transom rot there is only one cure. The basic test is done with an electric drill, but since you have removed a thru hull and found wet wood you can skip the drill test. You could drill a series of holes a few inches apart to find the vertical extent of the wet/rot, but it will only confirm what you already know. The delaminated FG is pointing the way to transom replacement. It may seem daunting now but once you get into it you'll be glad you did and will be rewarded with a near new boat.

Re: more about my transom (not as bad as i thought)
white hawk, thanks for trying to help, heres how it looks, okey, imagine your looking at the boat from the back (since were dealing with the transom) all the wood below the waterline is solid, the wood on the right side is solid, the wood it in middle is solid, the wood on the left side is not, however its only above the water line that its not, so its just the top left corner, so can i cut out the skin from there, and replace just that wood, FELLOWSHIP, for my sake, and anyone else who need to do it, can you post detailed transom rebuild instructions. infact, TRAYDER - why dont you make a how to sections (not on the forums) that we can all contribute to, and learn from???? just an idea..

Re: more about my transom (not as bad as i thought)
HA BEN
YOU CAN BUY GOOD BOOKS ON REPLACING TRANSOMS AND ALSO YOU CAN BUY SHIP SHAPES VIDEO ON REPLACING TRANSOMS YOU CAN ALSO LOOK ON THE NET FOR INFO ON DOING TRANSOMS I GOT A LOT OF INFO FROM THE WEST SYSTEM I BOUGHT SOME OF THEIR LITTLE BOOKLETS ON THE SUBJECT. HERE IS THEIR WEB ADDRESS THAT YOU CAN ORDER SOME OF THEIR STUFF IF YOUR LOCAL MARINE SUPPLIER DOESN’T CARRY THEIR STUFF. http://www.westsystem.com/ AS FOR THE METHOD YOU CHOOSE THAT COULD BE A PERSONAL CALL. I CAME IN FROM THE INSIDE SINCE I WAS REDOING EVERYTHING ON THE BOAT BUT FOR YOUR SMALLER JOB I GUESS MOST PEOPLE WOULD COME IN FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOAT. IF I HAD TO DO MY TRANSOM AGAIN THE ONLY THING I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY WOULD BE USING ½” MARINE PLY INSTEAD OF ¾” PLY EASIER TO WORK WITH AND YOU GET TO SOAK 6 SIDES OF THE PLY WITH EPOXY INSTEAD OF JUST 4 SIDES. IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THE WHOLE TRANSOM I THINK COMING IN FROM THE INSIDE IS THE BEST WAY FOR THE ADDED SUPPORT YOU CAN DO WHEN YOU ARE IN THERE. YOU CAN SEE SOME OF MY PICTURES ON THIS SIDE UNDER BOATS 23’ KEN MCGOVERNS. HOPE THAT HELPS IF YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS I WILL TRY TO ANSWER. FELLOW-SHIP |
