Default Outboards and Alternators

Do outboard motors have alternators?
I thought they did. Well, I have two batteries, and yesterday while I was out cruising one of them died and I had to switch to the other.
Now my motor did go under about a month ago. Is this something that should have been replaced?

Thanks,
Chris
