Removing rub rail?
Well, not actually removing, but it almost got tore off in a nice size swell. I have the aluminum rub rail. I took a section of it off to try to repair it and put it back together. When I got it off i noticed that the top half of the boat, the deck, or the white part sorry not sure what it is called exactly, is not completely attached to the hull. Is this how it is supposed to be? Or, is it supposed to be sealed? Or, do the screws in the rub rail act as the bond for the top and the hull?
I am pretty nervous about this part, as I do not want to mess something up. Thanks, Chris

Chris,
I'm pretty sure your cap and hull should be screwed together independent of the rub rail. You'll be able to tell if there are more holes/screws under the rub rail when it is removed. I would seal the cap and hull with 3M 5200 before you replace the rub rail.

Hey Chris-
The deck cap of your boat should either be pop-riveted or screwed to the hull. After you take off the rubrail, you should see the rivets/screws. As Scott mentioned, it is not a bad idea to 5200 the gap between the hull and liner before you replace the rubrail. The 5200 will seal out any water and will also strengthen the shoebox style joint between the cap and hull. PS- wear rubber dishwashing gloved while applying the 5200 (disposables don't work all that well)and have plenty of cotton rags available (paper towels fall apart). 5200 is very messy! Good luck. Ed

Mine does have rivets. They do not seem to be holding anymore though. Thanks for the advise on the 5200. Is there any special cleaning I need to do to prep the surface?
