F-16 Accidentally Fires on School
Thursday, November 04, 2004

STORIES

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. — A National Guard F-16 fighter jet (search) on a nighttime training mission Wednesday fired 25 rounds that tore through a Little Egg Harbor elementary school.

No one was injured.

The military is investigating the incident that damaged Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School (search) shortly after eleven o'clock.

Police were called to the area when a custodian heard what sounded like someone running across the roof of the school.

Police Chief Mark Siino says police officers noticed punctures in the roof. Ceiling tiles had fallen into classrooms and there were scratch marks in the asphalt outside the building.

State Air National Guard (search) Colonel Brian Webster says the two-inch long bullets are made of lead and do not explode.

He says it was unclear why the shots were fired.

Schools in New Jersey were closed Thursday because of a teachers convention.

WOW!

I have 2 comments:

If you think those pilots get in trouble for firing on Iraqi civilians, how screwed will they be for this?

Does the Finster Navy get to respond? If you need a coalition, I'm in...

Thank God no one was hurt.

November 12, 2002.

Details: The 177th Fighter Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard, based at Atlantic City International Airport, will dedicate one of its F-16 jet fighter aircraft to the citizens of Little Egg Harbor Twp in a ceremony at the base. The aircraft dedication program symbolizes the strong ties that exist between the wing and its communities and the outstanding support those communities have shown the unit. Many members of the 177th live in these communities and, as citizen airmen, “We wish to use this opportunity to reassert the important connection between the communities from which we come and the missions we fulfill around the world,” stated Col. Michael Cosby, Commander, 177th Fighter Wing. “What better way to show our appreciation than dedicating one of our aircraft which has been a time-honored tradition since the earliest days of aviation.”

Default What's going on in Little Egg Harbor?

By Associated Press
Friday Jan. 11, 2002

LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - An F-16 with the New Jersey Air National Guard crashed near a busy highway yesterday, and the pilot ejected safely, officials said.

The pilot, based at the 177th Fighter Wing at Pomona, parachuted into woods about one-quarter mile east of the Garden State Parkway. He suffered minor cuts and bruises. His identity was not released.

The jet had been practicing bomb drops at the Warren Grove range and was returning to base when a malfunction occurred, according to Col. Michael Cosby, the unit's commander.

Otto, did you find the clip of the one that ditched in the inlet a few years back? I guess they'll give anyone a 20 million dollar plane to fly.

When I saw this story on the local news this morning, I immediately thought of you Finster. Thank God it happened at night when no one was there. What was the pilot thinking? Is there a target range close by? If so, I think the ANG needs to think about moving it away from a school!

Scott, yeah there is a bombing range over here, but it no where near the school or anything else for that matter. It's about 15 miles in the pine lands which a few years back one of them missed with a bomb and burnt half of it up.

Finnie - glad nobody was hurt. Someone's head will roll as this was plain stupid. But these guys do need to train or a lot of them will die...

Anyone remember four five years ago that F16 pilot that glided in for a landing after his engine siezed? Think it's bad when your single outboard fries 5 miles offshore - what happens when your engine siezes five miles up
