Racor Fuel/Water Filter

Quick dumb question.

To drain my 2 external racor Parker filters do I just unscrew counter clockwise the drain plug until the plug comes off and then catch the contents in a small glass jar?

If it's the metal bowl with a pipe threaded plug....yes. If it's the blue/clear bowl....no. It loosens but doesn't get removed. Kind of like a pet-cock.

Yes, and the blue one is opposite of what you think.

My bad. Actually they are Yamaha fuel filters. They have the drain plug in the bottom. Anyone ever deals with these?

I tried the leftie loosie route tonight and the plug would not turn. Instead the whole unit started to turn.

Should I get an oil filter wrench and then hold the filter still while trying to turn the drain plug?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The brass plug is tapered pipe thread. It will unscrew from the lower white aluminum cup, which will also unscrew from the filter element. If you remove the brass plug you must prevent the lower cup from turning. There are wrenches available in that shape or a pipe wrench will work. Those are my least favorite design. You can still get 10 micron filtration with a stainless upper housing and clear/blue lower bowl which is more "user friendly" having the pet-cock design drain and is see thru.

If I want to remove the whole filter, it should screw out counter clockwise, correct? Also, If I were to do this where would I remove the sensor cable from?

Well, I took off both the external and internal fuel filters.

I found some water . Bummer.

Cleaned up the filters and reinstalled them. Check them after running the boat a while and no signs of water.

Still I am bringing her in to my friendly mechanic to have everything checked out.

FWIW - that "Yamaha" filter mount and bowl are manufactured by RACOR... not sure about the filter but RACOR probably made that as well (note the "Made in USA" on the filter).. The metal bowls are USCG approved for inboard motor use where as the plastic (blue bowls) are designed for outboard motor applications.
