Default console face refurb -- laminate replacement

Need to redo the console on a 23 with the large console and want to replace the faux wood laminate. What has everyone used to replace it with? I was thinking of using a piece of 1/4 inch black starboard. Is 1/4 inch sturdy enough to use considering all the gauge / electronic cutouts that need to be done or do I need to use 3/8?

Any other good alternatives for the replacement?

Use thicker than 1/4 it is to flimsy when flush mounting electronics. I tried black starboard and changed it to white I did'nt like the way it looked when I got it together.Make it cover as much possible not just the hole it looks much better. Mine is still not finished. http://s472.photobucket.com/albums/r...PICT0001-3.jpg

If I was doing it again I think I would talk to this guy. He makes some good looking custom stuff!

Or you could reglass it flat and cut holes where you want for your gages.
This is a nice thread also:

I used 1/2" black starboard. Hopefully someday I will replace with teak.

Well, I jumped the gun before all your helpful input and purchased some 1/4" starboard. Behind the existing formica laminate about 2/3 of the area has the fiberglass/ plywood core still there so the surface seems structurally sound. Hopefully, I can get away with the 1/4 inch as a temporary solution.

Ideally, I would like to get it replaced by Scott at Vector Led as his panel work is extremely nice.
