First Time Boat Project
Well I figured I would start a thread on my first boat project. I am sure I'm gonna have quite a learning experience doing this boat. I will be copying repair procedures that I have seen in numerous threads on here and the Classic Mako site during this project. I promise I will be asking numerous stupid questions also.
Here is the boat when I got it home. Here it is on a new trailer and after pressure washing the years of dirt and mildew off. Is this just factory foam that was put under the cap and is this normal for it to be in this shape for a boat of this age? The cap has many stress cracks also. The deck has many soft spots and stress cracks. The entire deck will be cut out and replaced as soon as cash allows. Found this trim tab motor underneath the console seat. Hopefully it is still good and will save me some money. I hate the way the glasswork looks buy the side boxes in front of the transom. Hopefully the transom was done right. I will have it looked at by a professional after I get the floor done. Anyone have any suggestions on what to fill this horrible looking gap between the floor and hull sides with? The previous owner had a new fuel tank made which never had fuel in it. I will remove it and paint it. I think I will spray it to get the practice since I have never used a spray gun before. Well that's all the progress so far. I will post as many pics as possible during this so feel free to give criticism and advice. Thanks for viewing, Ken |

Re: First Time Boat Project
Looks like a nice project!! Personally I wouldn't do any deck work until the transom condition is known. Make sure your new fuel lines are alcohol safe. Good luck!!

Re: First Time Boat Project
I was able to get the console removed this week. Had to have my Dad and Brother come over to help get it in the garage. It's not that heavy but very awkward to move by myself. My son's (Alex 8 and Chase 3) had to get in on the fun with the tank removal. The previous owner did not use any sealant when he installed the tank and console and I believe that is why the floor is so bad. The inspection cover was also left off allowing water and pine needles to enter the coffin for years. The smell would practically make you puke! I also believe it has ruined the new fuel tank also.
The only thing I saved from the mess of harnesses and hoses was the Seastar steering hoses and I doubt I will even reuse those. The tank was sitting in water since being installed a few years ago. It's a shame since the tank never had any fuel installed. The pitting is too deep for me to trust using it. I will take it and have it looked at by the shop that built it or another tank builder for evaluation. I have to work next Saturday but will try and get the hull looked at for pricing the following Saturday for the numerous fiberglass repairs. I will then be able to decide what I will pay to have done or what I will try and tackle myself. Ken |

Re: First Time Boat Project
Funny but mine has the same stress facture in the same place on the floor.
I also lifted the cover and found the tank good but the fill hose was in terrible condition. |

Re: First Time Boat Project
JOEKEN,
If I was you, and that tank had NOT had any fuel in it...I'd take it to the welding shop and have them repair those spots, ALOT cheaper and easier to deal with....especially since there had not been any fuel in it!!
