Fuel filler hose replacement

Fuel filler hose in my 1973 23'cc must be replaced. Any tips on the best way to do this?

No one has ever had to replace a fuel fill hose even with the addition of ethanol to gas???

Been there, done that.
Use a hose nipple and clamp the old and new hoses together at the gunwale. Don't cut the new hose to exact length until it's in place. Then pull the new hose into place using the old hose as the guide/snake. Make sure you clamp securely. Simple. Not easy, but simple.

So what you are saying is to thread the inch and one half I.D. hose DOWN from the gunwale to the tank after connecting it securely to the old hose? I have connected the old and new hose with tie wraps and have been trying to pull up from the tank to the gunwale and it's just not working.

Yep. Tie wraps won't do it though. You need wire clamps or worm-screw clamps as well as a two-ended hose nipple to connect the two hoses. I have done a few of these over my 40+ years of boating. I have failed to bring a hose up from the tank once or twice. I have never failed to pull one down from the gunwale.

Oh yeah. It's easier if the tank is removed.

Job done. Brought the hose up from the tank with tie wraps connecting both inch and one half hoses. Secret....spray lots of SILICONE spray on the hoses, near the connection. Slipped right on through up to the fill port on the gunwale.
Next, I have to do the vent hose.

The only way to pass that vent hose is by cutting a small (4") inspection port at the top inside left of the strut/conduit that runs from the deck to the gunwale where both the fuel filler hose and vent hose pass through. There is no way to pass the vent hose through the small right angle hole at the top of the conduit with the new hose connected. That hole is just about the same diameter as the vent hose. It then takes a sharp right angle and connects underneath the gunwale out the side to the vent port. I'll let you know how I make out.

Vent hose is in. A messy job putting both these hoses in but
it needed to be done. Ethanol in the fuel really did a job on the fuel filler hose. It was more or less rotted out.

JFM, did you have a hard time getting the hose loosened from the foam from the filler cap to the tank? I put in an inspection plate to access the 1 1/2" fill hose and the vent, but can't seem to break the filler free. Any suggestions? This is kicking my butt!
