A little ghetto - but; DIY plastic trailer fenders
I use my trailer twice a year; in and out. Except for nasty hurricanes or a breakdown.
It's a mid 80's Florida, Rocket trailer that has been bastardized many times over before I got it. I did get it made 'safe' after it traveled over a 1000 miles, via a cliche of Jack Daniels from a bottle swigging Deliverance type guys - to get the boat to me from FL many moons ago. When I received my handy man special-ready-for-resto all those years back, I was shocked that it made it to the FL state line, no less NY at all ! I digress. Since I've owned it, it has never had fenders and in that spirit, I think it's only fitting to fit on some 55 gallon drum-made, plastic fenders. The attachment points are all there from the past fenders. There's a commercial guy who hauls boats that I see with them on from time to time, but I've never had more than a passing glimpse. Anyone ever make these or know how ? |

A jig saw cuts dem big jugs e z peezy. I get'em in blue or white and use em for flushing motor w/salt-away. Grate fenders tho, fer shure. Cut the bottom 10-12" then cut in half or quarters or whatever looks right. Use the bottom to attach brackets to trailer frame and then you're rollin' in style.

Mc
Thx for the reply. Few questions: - What do you mean cut the bottom 10-12" ? - How do you use the bottoms to to attach to trailer ? Are you using the bottom as part of the fender ( like sides for the fender ? ) Got a pix ? |

Yeah, the bottoms are inside the wheels and some flat steel or alum can be shaped to attach the plastic quarter tubs to the trailer frame.
These barrel tubs are typically only 24" in diameter so they may need to be massaged for a sexier ghetto look and fit, as tires are probably 24" tall on a 13" wheel and 26" on a 14" wheel. Use a heat gun or blow drier with some strategic kerfing to flare the tub out for better wheel coverage. I'll try to make you a sketch tomorrow. Most fenders are about 9.5" wide, 10-12" just gives some wiggle room for error or less bend on mounting bracket

Nice!! LOL!! There needs to be a "build" thread on the Getto fenders... with pics of the progress.
Don't forget the curb feelers!

Do they take some kind of special paint that sticks to plastic? I would want my ghetto fenders to be black.

I've seen the blue and white used - I think 'they' make black 55 gallon drums too. If I make it, I'll take pix.
My livewell is made from a white, 55 gallon drum ( found the basic design online ) - works GREAT - and was free; 35 gallon capacity and very durable. I even made a directional flow with a pc of PVC pipe cut in 1/3 and 5200'd to inside of barrel - with 25 small 'nicks' on the edge that direct water flow. When needed, I place livewell on my i/o cover when fishing. Held in place with a heavy duty webbing/strap that is secured to the transom via thru bolted eye strap hardware. It is connected to a pump, overflow flows overboard via a 1 1/2" hose and keeps ( bunker/menhaden ) bait very HAPPY ! Also a little ghetto, but people always stop me and ask where I got it ?!
