Default Buying a boat long distance.

I may be buying a boat in another state. I have scheduled a marine surveyor to go over it and a mechanic to check out the engine. Assuming all checks out I will fly there and give the boat a test run. Any advice? I don't want to send a deposit until I see the boat in person but I don't want to fly on short notice and have to pay the airfare premium. Should I negotiate a price before buying an airline ticket or wait till I see the boat to make sure I really want it?? Seller has indicated the price is negotiable. Should I be asking if any members of this site could go take a look at boat for me? This is new for me but I haven't found the boat I want locally.

Where is it? Maybe one of us can give a look for you?

What I am really unsure about is the next step assuming the surveyor and mechanic give the thumbs up. How much do I or should I start negotiating before flying down and actually seeing the boat. I guess probably best to take a leap of faith and be prepared to walk if seller won't meet my price. Hey worst case is I get a weekend in Florida.

First I'd do a search of the For Sale section and N. Fl. craigs list to see what "equivalent" boats are going for to get a ballpark idea of what it's worth. Then wait for survey results, the findings of which may be useful in price negotiations. And as Ryan said, ask if there are any CSC folks in panhandle/Tallahassee area willing to take a look at it for you. I've looked at several boats locally for CSC folks. PM me if you want a copy of the checklist I use when checking out boats.

Default Boat Buying/Inspection Checklist

The subject checklist I put together is a MS Excel file. Can't attach Excel files, so tried saving it as a .pdf. It's just a cursory list, but I'm sure the guys on here will be able to add to/improve it! Might be a good CSC group project!
