Calling all DIY Painters
Gents: I'm feeling inspired to get back on my 23 rehab, which means its time to paint the cockpit area. For those that painted your projects, what paint did you use and were you happy with the results? I most likely will spray the primer but prefer to roll & tip the top coats. Also - Has anyone used Total Boat Non-Skid. How's it holding up? Thanks

I used the Awl grip system, with awl grip grip Tex for the nonskid. A lot of work and stressful for a first timer, but it turned out pretty good. Key ius having a dry clean area to spray for at least 24 hours. ask me how I know that morning dew ruins top coat...

Painted the whole thing.
I used a 2 part urethane primer. Legacy 9860 is local go to. It’s awesome. You could probably get it cheaper on mainland it’s a 4:1 urethane primer. Also used legacy tb540pb as the 2 part paint for cap. Again the go to here. Wow is it good. 4:1 25% quick drying- less bugs, do it on a hot dry day when bugs not out. 10-3 was my best spraying window here in non-rainy season. Forget about it in rainy season (oct-apr) I sprayed brightsides largo blue for bottom and ezpoxy for bottom gray. All with great results. Beautiful shine easy clean up. Took a long, long time to dry. Don’t oversand it more than data sheet says. I used petit ezpoxy on deck. I’d recommend some kind of silica additive. I’ve used other total boat things nothing but love but haven’t used that one. Tape it off. Roll paint down. Add lots of sand. Recover and topcoat. Results were amazing. In a few spots under lots and I mean lots of rain here it came loose. I’ve decided it’s b/c I sanded to 400 grit on deck primer rather than 180. Everywhere else is perfect so that’s what it must have been. Don’t use grits. Fire ants love them. |
