Repainting black windshield frames

The formerly black metal frames around the windshield, etc on my 80’s vintage Sceptre are badly weathered. A lot of it is down to bare metal.
I would like to restore it and thought this might be the place to begin learning what steps are necessary, materials, equipment, etc. from folks who have done it.

I painted mine. I stripped all the plexiglass and gaskets out. Sanded the frames down to 220. I suppose you could mask it off…

Primed with rustoleum pro aluminum primer
Then painted with rustoleum pro aluminum paint. Looks pretty good.

I wish I could’ve powder coated them but nobody on my island does it.

That’s very helpful. Thank you. I’ll be masking it off. I’m not trying to do a total ground up restoration, I just want something that will look decent and hold up for a few more seasons.

I’ve done two of them..20 scepter and on the 25 seacraft..strip down as mentioned...sand fill and fair with system 3 quick fair...spray with awlgrip primer and paint...they have held up...getting the right weather stripping is the next chore...use the research button for that I’ve forgot the name of the company.

We used to get light poles powder coated but really prefer painting as once the powder coating gets chipped and it always seamed to happen touch up sucked ! Paint always came out and lasted better .

Thank you wattaway. Glad it didn’t happen then. The paints held up well. I suspect a better custom mixed deal would be better with sprayer now but I’m not taking it off again. I’ll just touch it up as needed.

Ps don’t forget to clean surfaces thoroughly with lacquer thinner etc.
